American College Radio - more info

Dav Mullin - Friday, 23 July 2010, at 5:10 pm
Hi everyone who plays in a band (Martin, Stefan, etc.) or may be interested from a business point of view (Mazz).

A couple of months ago I posted a thread about contacting American College radio stations. I got a list of colleges to contact from an American friend, who has since added quite a few more. Over the past couple of days I've been Googling these colleges, getting addresses and contact details and info about how to go about submitting stuff to them. A few accept MP3s, but most want CDs. It's a bit of a tedious drag, but I'm making progress.

It'll take me a couple more days to get all the information, but if anyone would like a copy of the list once I've finished it, I'd be happy to pass it on. You can leave your contact details in this thread, or contact me at -

Ey up Dav - it's all worth a shout. By the way - got a couple of questions for you:

Did you ever get any further interest in your songs on the BBC Music thing?

Did you submit any more?

I sent a couple of ours, they were listened to but that was it. I don't even know if I sent them to the right place - they could have gone to a rap DJ for all I know. It would be nice if there was some feedback even if it was bad news.

Hi Martin

I uploaded two songs when I first found out about the BBC Introducing site a couple of months ago - that's when I put a message on this board about it. I got a reply saying one had been listened to but heard nothing more. I've recently uploaded three more, but I've heard nothing yet.

It could be that the songs aren't good enough, or that the recording quality isn't right for broadcast. We use a pretty basic setup - an old version of Cubase on a ropey old computer - so maybe it just doesn't sound right.

I don't know mate. Perhaps it's that they're inundated with stuff and it takes ages for them to listen to all the material that's coming in. Anyway, for the minimal effort involved in uploading them, I'm going to keep going. If I hear from them, I'll post a message.

I'm not under any illusions about fame and fortune, I just think it would be cool to have our stuff played on the radio and maybe build a bit of a following, hence the American college radio thing. It'd be great to make some money doing music, but primarily I want people to hear the songs. Good luck with your stuff.

I agree Dav - under no illusions whatsoever - there's plaenty of unsigned bands better than us - but how cool would it be to get a song played on the radio?

(Saying that - there's plenty of bands WORSE than us with record deals and DJs blowing sunshine up their arses)

Keep plugging away it at Dav, same here, love my music, guitar, recording etc. I'll get round to getting a myspace up myself soon (bit of a lazy git). They must get shitloads of uploads so I wouldn't take it as not being good enough. probably got some kind of criteria or agenda for what they want. Sounded pretty cool what I heard anyway.

Hi Martin - it would be very cool to have a song played on the radio. For me that would be great - any money coming in from music would be a bonus. But honestly, right now I want people to hear our songs and enjoy them, that's all. You hint (DJ comment) at what may be the problem - the Blacbits aren't cool and trendy, we're not in our twenties, and we don't play the type of music that the kids are listening to, so our chances are probably slim. Never mind, keep going.

Alan - thanks mate. I'm looking forward to hearing your stuff when it's up on Myspace.

Guess at least there are sites and etc where you can upload music, remember sending audio tapes (remember them lol) off back in the day. Pain in the arse trying to get heard in those days :-)

Hey Martin

I got an email yesterday saying BBC Introducing had listened to one of our tracks (Good or Evil). Hopefully they'll play it. BTW, a local radio station here in Manchester - Wythenshawe FM - has just played our tune Electricity. I'm not sure how many listeners they get (probably not many) but it was a buzz to hear it!

Good luck with yours mate.

Dav that's brilliant - I'd love to have any radio station play one of our tracks. Nice one!!!

Nice one Martin. It's only a small local station, but it was still pretty cool. I've been doing music since I was a kid and playing with bands off and on for 20 years, but that was the first time I'd heard anything I'd done being played on the radio. It was great when the DJ said - and now a song from the Blacbits.

BTW mate, I've completed that list of American college radio stations with names of people to contact and addresses etc. If you want it, let me know. Also, I'm now working on getting a list of independent records companies, so if you want that too, drop me a line. Some of these companies accept online demo submissions so you don't even need a stamp and a jiffy bag!
